Prescribe Safe Monterey Reduces Outpatient Clinic Opioid Prescribing by 50%

After generating their own set of safe prescribing guidelines, clinical champions in Monterey County lowered opioid prescribing and increased the use of non-opioid therapies by 300%.

“We would tell our colleagues, ‘please don’t use or reduce opioid [prescribing],’ and the response was ‘that’s fine, but when the patient is in pain, I have to do something –so can you please give me some options?’”

- Dr. Casey Grover, Chair, Emergency Medicine at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula
